Dear Families of 3-Fitzgerald,

We enjoyed sharing our experiences from vacation this week. Our class played a fun memory game to share what we did. Ask your child about it.

We reflected on our biography writing pieces. Students had a chance to assess themselves using the rubric they worked so hard to create to guide their work in the beginning of the writing process. In addition, students reflected on their accomplishments throughout the project, including their monument.

We continued to tally the medals earned by many countries during the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Next week, we will graph our data in partnerships.

Next week we will also begin a unit of study on folk tales. Students will have the opportunity to read loads of tales, discuss with peers, record story elements, and eventually retell a tale orally to the class.

During Reader's Workshop this week, we focused on Chinese folk tales. This wrapped up our unit of study on China, as well as provide a foundation for our upcoming unit on traditional folk tales. Students practiced pulling out and recording basic elements of a folk tale. We practiced putting the lesson learned from the tale into our own words. We're looking forward to reading many more folk tales.

We focused our writing this week on the pre-writing stage. Students worked on a "treasure" map of a place which is special to them. They marked their maps with X's to show where their buried stories (treasure) are. Next week, we will use the maps to choose a short story to tell from our special place. We are excited to put our maps on display for our visiting author, Ralph Fletcher, in a couple weeks.

Math

This week you received your child's Mid-Year Math Assessment profile. This will serve as a guide for both school and home, on areas in which students have strengths, and identifying some areas on which students can improve. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.

We began Unit 8: Fractions this week. Students this week worked to name fractions shown in a shape, and as part of a set. We also created fraction number strips to show fractions on a line. These concepts prove frustrating to some students, but we are certainly working together. There are some explanations and games for students on the Math Links page.

Next week students will learn about equivalent fractions and comparing fractions.
