Dear Families of 3-Fitzgerald, This week we read our Time For Kids about the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada. The games will actually being over our vacation. Students received an Olympic packet to read about the Olympic Torch and Rings. Also in the packet is an Olympic Medal Tracker tally sheet for a variety of countries. Children are encouraged to watch part of the Olympics and tally the number of Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals different countries win. Please have students bring back to school the last 2 pages of the packet. We will be using the tally sheet and bar graph after vacation since the Olympics will be running until Feb 28th. We enjoyed our opportunity this week to culminate both our Biography and China unit by spending time and sharing with our fellow third grade friends. We had a monument museum. We also had our Chinese Luncheon. We even had time to fit in exchanging Valentines! I hope you all have enjoy your February vacation!

We finished reading "Sarah, Plain, & Tall" this week. Our focus was on pulling very important points out of the text to help us predict and connect to the story. Students responded through writing and through discussions. We celebrated finishing the book by watching the movie. Playing the role of movie critics, we spotted many difference between the book and the movie, and discussed these observations. Our biography unit of study has come to an end. Students finished publishing their biography book reports. Our monuments came out beautifully. Thank you so much for your support in sending in materials for your children to build their own monuments. On Friday, we shared these monuments across the grade level. Look for pictures on our website over vacation. After the break, students will use the rubric they created to assess themselves and reflect on this project. After vacation, we will focus shortly on Chinese folk tales before moving into a traditional folk tale unit of study.

Our study of China continued. This week we read a couple Chinese folk tales. We read "The Story of Chopsticks" and "Grandfather Tang's Story". In the latter, students had the chance to recreate the tangram animals from the story, as well as create their own tangram designs. Ask your child about their experience. There is a link on our homepage to an online tangram puzzle for kids students might enjoy trying. We partner read an article about the giant panda and answered comprehension questions. Finally, on Friday, we had our Chinese Luncheon in honor of Chinese New Year - which is on February 14th this year. We enjoyed spending time with all of our third grade friends! |
This week we reviewed symmetrical and congruent shapes. We took our Mid-Year Benchmark Assessment in two parts. The assessment will be sent home after vacation. We also had the chance to combine math and social studies by having a lesson about and exploring with tangrams. We will begin a unit on fractions after vacation. This is actually unit 8. We will visit chapter 7 (Multiplication & Division) after that. Play Number Top-It online here versus the computer by clicking here. Try playing this at home with a friend or family member! Play Multiplication Baseball online by clicking here. (This is one of our favorite new games in class and this online version is super cool!) |
