Dear Families of 3-Fitzgerald,

This week we wrapped up reading our biographies. Our biography work has shifted to writing our report.

Next week we will begin reading "Sarah, Plain and Tall". This will take us through to February vacation.

Our Kindness & Justice Challenge continued this week. We discussed words such as respect, responsibility, perseverance, tolerance, and non-violence. Many meaningful connections were made by the children to our Civil Rights unit. Although our Kindness & Justice Challenge draws to a close this week, our work with treating others with fairness and goodness continues!

We continued with our work with biographies. This week we focused on connecting our learning of paragraphs with organizing our reports.

Students worked in groups to report out on various monuments in our country. We noticed how symbolism is used in monuments. Next week, students will apply this knowledge by planning a monument for their biography character. We have many incredible ideas and are excited to work on this project!

Social Studies

Math

We began a unit of study on China. We looked at numerous images from China, and also "flew" over Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong on Google Earth.

Students researched in pairs using non-fiction texts to learn about the geography and culture of China. Next week we will continue this research as we learn more about China, including its history and government.

We learned all about triangles, quadrangles, and other polygons this week. Students worked with partners to build and explore shapes using straws and twist-ties. We also learned how to draw angles.

Next week we will explore and build 3-dimensional shapes.
