Dear Families of 3-Fitzgerald, This week your child has received his/her progress report. This is a different report than in the primary grades although the descriptors for grades 3-5 build on the skill base of the primary grades. Please keep in mind that in third grade we begin looking carefully at the independent application of gained skills across the curricula. The third grade team has worked carefully over the past few years to match our assessment of your child's progress with the Guilderland third grade curriculum expectations and gains made since the fall conference. If you have any questions regarding your child's progress report, please do not hesitate to contact me. In addition to the progress report, your child completed a “self check” of his/her progress thus far in third grade. Students will use this to help them list goals they will work toward After wrapping up units of study in Math, Reading, and Writing this week,we will enjoy time with our friends throughout the third grade level during next week. First, we will share our latest Milestones pieces with our third grade friends. We will be learning about the Winter Solstice with a variety of activities. Students will have the opportunity to rotate to all third grade classrooms to complete an educational activity surrounding winter and/or winter solstice. In our own classroom, Monday will be our Craft Day. Tuesday we will celebrate U.S. culture with a guest appearance by jazz musician Brian Patneaude. On Wednesday, we will wear pajamas and read a favorite winter/holiday story.

In Readers' Workshop, students have been finishing up reading about the history of the United States. We also read about the U.S. government, including what the 3 branches of government are, and what the jobs each branch does. Through class discussions, we connected this new knowledge to our everyday lives. Next week we will learn about the culture of the United States and specifically the Harlem Renaissance and jazz. This will wrap up our unit of study on the U.S. During Writers' Workshop, we put our finishing touches on our published memoir pieces. Students practiced speaking and listening skills as we listened to one another's memoirs before our big celebration day. We were thrilled to have so many of you come into our classroom for our Writing Celebration on Wednesday! Students did an amazing job sharing their titles and dedications outloud to the whole crowd despite some nervous jitters. After our celebration, we talked as a class about what our favorite parts were from the celebration. Our favorites ranged from having parents come in, to seeing a smile on a grandparent's face, to being proud about reading outloud. Thank you for your support in making our Writing Celebration a huge success! |

Students reviewed for their Unit 4 Math Assessment this week. Ask your child about the cooperative learning groups he/she participated in to create and solve multiplication and division problems. This activity featured groups working on a chart paper, then rotating to the next station. Students then solved the problem left for them and created a new problem for the next group in the rotation. After all rotations had been completed students had the chance to share with the whole class how they solved the problems. Our Math Assessment was taken on Thursday, 12/17. You can expect to see your child's assessment early next week. Our next unit of study in Math will be Unit 5: Place Value in Whole Numbers and Decimals. We will begin this unit when we return from break. The Family Letter for this Unit 5 will be sent home after vacation, but it is here online if you would like to view it ahead of time. Also after break, we will resume our weekly multiplication quizzes. Ask your son/daughter about the chart he/she is working to complete. We have a series of multiplication practice and quiz sheets. Students are given a set of facts to study on Monday. On Fridays, they are quizzed on those facts. As they master the facts, they color in their personal chart and move on to the next set of facts.
