ELA

Dear Families of 3-Fitzgerald,

With this week came snow, first a little, then enough to result in our first snow day of this school year. In order for us to go outside for recess, children will need to have a winter coat, hat, and mittens/gloves. Those who would like to play in the field will need to bring boots. We will try to go outside as long as the temperatures/wind are suitable for recess.

In keeping with our Milestones work, students will have an opportunity to write about a lost tooth. This information was in the homework packet from this week. Students should bring their completed story to school by Monday 12/14 with either a photograph or hand drawn illustration. They will have the chance to mount their work on construction paper. We will have a sharing time with the other third grade classrooms. This is a wonderful chance for students to take pride in sharing their work and memories with their peers.

On Wednesday, December 16, your children will be participating in a Writing Celebration for the memoirs they have written. You are welcome to come at 8:00 that morning. Students will share the dedication page of the memoirs they have been working on. After that, your son/daughter will read their memoir to the person whom it is being given to. We will also have time to enjoy refreshments. At 8:45, students will need to prepare to go to an assembly and we will wrap up at that point.

In Readers' Workshop, students have been working in partnerships in the content area of Social Studies. We have been studying the features of non-fiction and reading about the history of the United States. Students have been practicing the strategy called "chunk and retell". Ask your child to show you this strategy at home.

During Writers' Workshop, we revised and crafted our memoirs to make them more specific and vivid. Students had the opportunity to conference with a peer. Together, the pairs revised and edited their stories. We learned that working together can help us see things that we may have missed on our own, resulting in stronger writing and lessons learned. Children are publishing the stories on the Alpha Smarts and will look forward to sharing their pieces with you, and/or the subject of their memoir.

Math

Students continued exploring with multiplication and division as we worked in Unit 4. Children were introduced to the multiplication grid. This important tool can be used as a reference for students learning their times tables. One was sent home for your child. You can also find one here. Our Unit 4 math assessment will be next Thursday, December 17.

Students are also encouraged to learn their times tables. Ask your son/daughter about the chart he/she is working to complete. We have a series of multiplication practice and quiz sheets. Students are given a set of facts to study on Monday. On Fridays, they are quizzed on those facts. As they master the facts, they color in their personal chart and move on to the next set of facts. For more information on this process, please check out this link.
