Dear Families of 3-Fitzgerald, Our first week of December seemed to race by us. We began a new unit of study in both social studies and math. We have new seat groups for the month, and with that comes new team names. Ask your child about his/her group. In addition to all the excitement in our classroom, we worked with Miss Doak's third grade to learn about the layers of the earth (which coincided with the conclusion of our rocks and minerals unit). Ask your child about the two activities he/she did with their partner from 3-D. In keeping with our Milestones work, next week students will have an opportunity to write about a lost tooth. You will find information on this in the homework packet sent home this coming Monday. |
In Readers' Workshop, we continue our work in non-fiction. Next week students will be reading a non-fiction book with a partner to learn about the history of the United States. Thank you for keeping up with the reading logs at home. I appreciate your sending the log in when it is completed. During Writers' Workshop, we began writing a memoir piece. Students carefully gathered seed ideas for a special memory they had with a person who they feel they share a "golden relationship" with. We can't say too much else at this point because the students want to surprise you and share their creative pieces of work during a writing celebration for families. The celebration will be Wednesday, December 16th. Please look for information that will be coming along to solidify a time for the writing celebration. |

We began our unit of study on the United States this week. This will take us up to our holiday break. Students will be learning about the geography, history, culture, economy, and government of the United States. This week students navigated an atlas as a means of reading maps to locate information about the geography of our country. We talked about how climate and physical features (mountains, lakes, rivers) can affect a person's way of life. Students connected their earlier globe learning to our current unit of study by locating the United States on their student-created globes. As we move further along in our study of world communities, students will continue to label the countries on their globes. |
We began Unit 4: Multiplication and Division this week. Students wrote a variety of multiplication number stories (which you can expect to see up on the website early next week). Our focus this week was primarily a hands-on approach to multiplying and dividing in real-world scenarios. In addition to this math learning, students are challenged to master their times tables. Ask your son/daughter about the chart he/she is working to complete. We have a series of multiplication practice and quiz sheets. For more information on this process, please check out this link.
