Dear Families of 3-Fitzgerald, Wow, can you believe we're already one week into November? We have been hard at work this week plunging into a couple new units of study. Ask your child about his/her new seating group. The students found associations they had with one another and agreed on a team name. Throughout the month, students will work as a group on a variety of learning topics. Over the weekend, your child should think about a special friend, best friend, or sibling with whom your child has a fond memory. Students will need to write a paragraph about this friend for our second Milestone piece: Friendship. These writing samples should be written by your child and accompanied by a child-drawn illustration, or a photograph. In order to have these pieces prepared for sharing with the other 3rd grade classrooms, please have your child bring their Milestones writing piece to school by Tuesday, November 10th. To view friendship pictures to spark your creativity, check out the Friends page of the Milestones Project by clicking here.

In Readers' Workshop this week we began a unit of study on a specific genre in fiction: ghost stories. Students are reading ghost story chapter books with a partner. We have been practicing how partners can help each other keep track of story elements, make predictions, decode tricky words, and ask questions to help each other think about their reading. Students have been jotting down their questions and thoughts during their reading in their reader's notebook. During sharing time, partners as well as book groups have had the opportunity to have a discussion about their reading. Ask your child about the ghost story he/she is reading and about the group he/she is in. During Writers' Workshop, we are wrapping up our personal narrative on an activity that we have done. We will look to finish these pieces up next week and begin publishing them.

We have begun our unit of study on Rocks & Minerals. Students chose science partners and have observed a variety of rocks and sorted them by various properties. Ask your child about observing the rocks and working with his/her partner. There are photos of our work as scientists in class. You can go to the Photos page, or click here. As we continue this unit of study, we will be visiting the library in small groups to research the rock cycle. We will utilize the encyclopedias, online resources, and other informational texts. |
Unit 2 has come to a close. Students took their math assessment on Thursday. You can expect to see the corrected assessment early next week. We will begin a unit of study in Measurement next week when we start Unit 3 of Everyday Math. The parent letter for Unit 3 has been sent home.
