Dear Families of 3-Fitzgerald,

This week we started laying the foundation for our biography project. This project will allow students to teach the class all about the person they are reading about. The children are very much into their biographies! Ask your child who he/she is learning about.

Third graders will have the chance to share their latest milestones piece, "Playtime", with their friends throughout the grade level next Thursday. Our written work will be displayed on our Milestones Wall in the Green Pod for all to see.

We began reading biographies this week. Students had the opportunity to browse various biographies and choose one that would be a good fit for them. As we read, we are practicing taking notes in our own words. The notes will be used when we combine our biography reading with our paragraphing lessons in writing into a paper about our famous person.

In writing this week, we continued to work on paragraphing. We practiced supporting topic sentence. This learning was combined with our Civil Rights learning. Students wrote about what they dream to improve the lives of children in the world.

Math

We continued to learn about Civil Rights through a variety of books. Students had strong discussions in class about the injustices and the changes that came about.

Next week we will wrap up our unit on Civil Rights. Our class will also be participating in the Kindness and Justice challenge with the other third grade classrooms. A letter was sent home Wednesday with information explaining this. Make sure to check in with your child next week as we are looking forward to this activity.

Our unit following Civil Rights will be a study of China.

This week we continued work with place value. Our work this week took us into the area of decimals, and the places of tenths and hundredths. Students worked with base ten blocks, as well as money to understand this new concept.

We will be wrapping up Unit 5 next week. Our end of unit assessment will be given Wednesday, Jan. 20th.

The next unit to follow, unit 6, will be on Geometry.
