Dear Families of 3-Fitzgerald, This week we began learning about our UNICEF Halloween Fun Fair. We began by brainstorming and discussing our wants and needs. We had a meaningful discussion about how every child in the world needs and wants the same things, but unfortunately, not every child gets all of his/her wants, or even his/her needs. We then watched “Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF” which is a very powerful, yet age appropriate, DVD to comlement our UNICEF and Social Studies activities. Some of the images on the DVD were difficult to see and think about. It is hard to imagine not every child can go to a doctor when he/she is sick. It’s hard to imagine a life where you couldn’t go to school, or have safe drinking water. After the DVD, we had a conversation about how we can each make a difference in the lives of others. Although the content is tough, we realized that by learning about the hardships of others, we can help make a change. I encourage you to have a conversation with your child. You could visit: www.unicefusa.org/trickortreat to learn more about this program. |
We continued story mapping by reading a variety of great read alouds. Children then branched off into groups to complete their own story map. After they were finished, the students presented their maps in front of the class. During Writing this week, we added more ideas to our Writer’s Notebook. We thought about who we could write about. After brainstorming for people who are special to us, we drew out a story web and tried to really “zoom in” on one idea. We then began rough drafts and are currently revising and editing.

Classrooms Care: Scholastic Book Clubs’ “Classrooms Care” is a philanthropy-based literacy campaign designed to teach children about the joys and rewards of reading and giving. It’s very easy to participate. Students around the country will team-up with Super Bowl MVPs Eli and Peyton Manning to help donate one million books to children in need. This program fits well with our UNICEF Halloween Fun Fair and our committment to making a change for the better in the world. We’re excited to read and even more exciting to have that reading help someone else out! Our class has signed up and has pledged to read 100 books by December 18, 2009. Our class will be reading for “Team Eli” and will be competing against “Team Peyton”. We will be keeping track online of the total number of books we have read. Here is the latest tally: |
This week we continued working on finding differences using our number grid. Using the number grid helps students by giving them a visual to encourage number sense. We also worked with money this week. At home, your child could show you the game “Beat the Calculator”. It is a game where one person is the “brain” and one is the “calculator”. Children flip two cards, at which point the “brain” calls out the answer, while simultaneously, the “calculator” types in the numbers. This is a great way to practice basic addition skill. You could adapt this game for subtraction or multiplication as well! |
