Dear Families of 3-Fitzgerald,

Happy New Year! We had a great first week back. We spent some time reflecting on the "Self Check Progress Reports" we did before vacation. We each thought of an achievable goal and wrote this down as a New Year's resolution. We tried to think about ways we could improve or challenge ourselves in school both academically and socially, as well as something we'd like to accomplish out of school. We will be working toward these goals. Ask your child what he/she decided on.

We began a new units of study in reading, math, and social studies. There will be new links posted to the website over the weekend for these areas of study. Check back on the "Subjects" page soon.

In Readers' Workshop, students began learning about biographies. We read picture book biographies and used a graphic organizer to take notes. Students will be reading a biography of their choice next week. The goal is to take notes about the character's life. In the coming weeks, students will be connecting this learning to writing by composing a biography book report. Finally, they will make a monument for the person whom they researched. Be looking for more information to come next week.

During Writers' Workshop, we practiced writing the "Perfect Paragraph". Students learned to write a topic sentence about their main idea, followed by three supporting details, and wrapped up with a closing sentence. Students used the "hamburger model" to visualize how their paragraph should be structured. We wrote several short writing pieces to practice this method.

We began learning about Civil Rights. This learning is connected to the culture portion of our United States, including the Great Migration and Harlem Renaissance.

Next week students will connect their "perfect paragraph" structure and practice with their Civil Rights learning. They will write a short piece about something they would like to see change.

We began Unit 5: Place Value. Students are learning about place value of whole numbers up to the millions place. We have been comparing large numbers and reviewing the value of digits in various places.

The Unit 5 family letter was sent home on Tuesday, but may also be viewed online by clicking here.
