Dear Families of 3-Fitzgerald, Calling all materials! We spent time this week looking at monuments from across the world as we planned our own "mini monuments" that will honor our individual biography characters. Students brainstormed ideas and mapped out plans. Your child should have brought home their "supply list" for their monument. Our plan is to gather what materials we can over the weekend and begin building these monuments next week. Students were asked to think of an "alternative" material in case their first choice was too hard to find. We will aim to be finished building by Wednesday, add finishing touches on Thursday, and share our monuments with those of the other sections of 3rd grade next Friday. This will be a wonderful time to reflect on our own work and view that of others. |
This week we began reading "Sarah, Plain and Tall" by Patricia MacLachlan. This story is set in the US midwest during the early 1900s. Students are reading with partners. As we read, we have begun to code the text for important points and connections. We are practicing replying to questions for each chapter by using our Reader's Notebook. Ask your child about the book. We are beginning to wrap up our Biography Book Reports in writing. Students are using the rubric they created to check their work, make revisions, and produce their best work! We will aim to have all reports finished by the middle of next week. We have enjoyed connecting our reading to writing with this project.

Our study of China continued. This week we focused on the history and government of China. We used our chunk and retell strategies as we read a non-fiction article. We compared and contrasted China's government to our own government. Students continued working in pairs to read and take notes on China's culture. We learned that good readers reread when they are missing information. This strategy is an important one! Our Chinese Luncheon will be next Friday, February 12th. If your child will be ordering Chinese food that day, please send back the pink slip of paper. Thank you for the outpouring of volunteers. In order to have the luncheon run as smoothly as possible for the children, each 3rd grade classroom will be responsible for three parent volunteers. In an effort to be fair, parents who have expressed an interest in volunteering and who have not yet had the opportunity to help out in our classroom will be volunteering that day. It is so great that we have so many involved parents and there will certainly be more opportunities to volunteer as the year continues. |
This week we drew and measured angles. We also explored polyhedrons and made a couple of 3-D shapes of our own. We continued to practice geometry terms during our math time. We also reviewed finding perimeter and area. We wrapped up Unit 6. You can expect to see your child's assessment early next week. Play Number Top-It online here versus the computer by clicking here. Try playing this at home with a friend or family member! Play Multiplication Baseball online by clicking here. (This is one of our favorite new games in class and this online version is super cool!) |
