January News
What an AMAZING Marble Maze Museum we had right before the holiday break. All the students worked so hard demonstrating their knowledge of simple machines. The winning maze took 24 seconds for the marble to wind down through a series of simple machines. There was a close second place at 22 seconds, one at 21 seconds and 20 seconds as well. Our class' museum went extremely well. It is so nice to see students excited about learning and proud of their accomplishments. Thank you for all the help you contributed at home! Be sure to look at the pictures from the maze museum!

We will continue to prepare for the ELA exam during the first week back to school. The test for the fifth-graders is comprised of two parts - the reading comprehension, multiple-choice and the listening section with writing. There will not be an essay on the fifth grade exam, however, students will have a few paragraphs they are asked to edit. The ELA exam is scheduled for Tuesday, January 13 and Wednesday, January 14. Please make certain your child has plenty of sleep the night before, as well as a healthy breakfast the days of the tests.

In writing, we will be working on writing a "how-to" piece. Students will practice the art of fine writing with a fun, hands-on activity involving making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Then students will have the opportunity to choose a topic to research and write detailed directions in the how-to format. Once the final draft is written, we will enjoy watching students demonstrate how to do the topic they chose.
.
Social Studies will be integrated with reading as we will be learning about Canada, Mexico and Latin America. We will look forward to learning about the culture, products, government, and land of the different regions.

We will delve further into math by completing a unit on long division. Students will learn strategies to help them divide easier mentally. We will continue to study and practice our multiplication tables so that our division may come a little easier to us.
